Assistant to the Running of the Angela Carter Society
(Voluntary Unpaid Role)
The Angela Carter Society is inviting expressions of interest for a voluntary assistant role supporting the running of the Society.
The Society exists to promote research, discussion, and creative engagement with the life, work, and continuing legacy of Angela Carter. Through conferences, publications, online events, and digital platforms, we foster an international community of scholars, writers, students, and readers drawn to Carter’s formally inventive and politically engaged writing.
About the role
This role is conceived as a flexible assistantship to the Society’s ongoing activities. The core responsibilities will mainly include:
- Serving as editorial assistant for the annual Angela Carter Society Newsletter
- Helping to organise and support a biannual online discussion event, held in the years between the Society’s biennial conferences
The position is currently unpaid, and we are keen that the successful applicant negotiates which tasks they are able and willing to take on, according to their interests, experience, and availability.
Likely areas of involvement
Depending on skills and preference, tasks may include:
- Copy‑editing and proofreading newsletter content
- Liaising with contributors and committee members
- Assisting with newsletter production and distribution (ideally using Mailchimp)
- Supporting basic image handling, layout, or light design work
- Helping to promote Society activities via social media (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook)
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
- Confidence in copy‑editing and collaborative working
- Reliability and good organisational skills
Desirable:
- Familiarity with Mailchimp or similar mailing platforms
- Basic photo editing or design experience
- Social media awareness within academic, literary, or cultural contexts
- An interest in Angela Carter’s work
